“Oh my God! I see them! This is incredible!”—Everyone was thrilled during the unforgettable experience of swimming with whale sharks in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. This tour is a bucket-list adventure, only available from May to September when these gentle giants migrate to the area.
As an underwater photographer, I had the incredible opportunity to document this experience alongside Christina Cindrich—TV producer, host, actress, and three-time Emmy Award winner—while filming for her project Global Passport. We set out from Cancun at sunrise, departing at 6:30 AM. By 7:30 AM, we reached an unmarked location in the open sea, where the real magic began. Despite the bumpy ride, the excitement in the air was undeniable. Within minutes, our captain spotted them, and we were diving into the crystal-clear waters, face-to-face with these magnificent creatures.
Whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean, can grow up to 62 feet long. Despite their size, they are peaceful, slow-moving filter feeders, thriving on plankton, krill, and fish eggs. However, statistics fade away when you’re in the water with them. The only thing that matters is the breathtaking moment—seeing their massive silhouettes glide effortlessly through the deep blue.
Capturing Christina as she swam alongside these giants was both a privilege and a humbling experience. Half an hour underwater was enough to remind me of how small we are compared to these graceful creatures. Unlike us, frantically swimming to keep up, whale sharks moved with an unshakable sense of balance and peace—entirely at home in their world.
