My photos published in The New York Times

“Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.” – Mike Singletary

Ask me this question, and my answer would be: “The opportunity to create.”

For 15 years, I have been capturing genuine interactions and visual stories of families, couples, and incredible women. Photography allows me to showcase beauty as I see it, turning fleeting moments into lasting memories.

In June 2021, The New York Times presented me with an incredible opportunity to photograph Imani Bashir and her son, Nasir. Later that month, the article “Teaching My Black Son to Swim” was published, and my images became the visual representation of this powerful and heartfelt story.

The session came with challenges—limited time and less-than-ideal lighting (the true king of photography). But as a professional, adapting to such conditions is part of my craft, and I embraced the challenge with passion. Some days, the light works in your favor; other days, it doesn’t. But when you have a single opportunity to create a compelling visual story, you make it work.

I was deeply moved to see that The New York Times selected the very images I believed best captured the story, especially the main one. It was an honor to have my work featured in the publication. Additionally, my underwater photos of Nasir were shared on The New York Times Instagram account.
